Detroit Red Wings close to re-signing Kirk Maltby

Kirk Maltby(notes) moved closer to re-signing with the Detroit Red Wings with word Tuesday that GM Ken Holland expects to cut the veteran winger a one-year, two-way deal this week.

A member of the Red Wings' Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008, Maltby has appeared in 1,072 games since entering the NHL in the 1994-94 season. He joined the Red Wings in March 1996. A checking forward, he has 128 goals, 132 assists and 867 penalty minutes.

the Grind Line, part of a lot of success in the late '90s and 2000s," Holland said. "I thought Kirk got off to a real good start last year and then he sort of lost his job. But I think he's got some hockey to give. And the two-way contract gives him an opportunity to make decisions about his career."

He was a third-round pick, 62nd overall, in 1992 by the Oilers. After being acquired in 1996, Maltby joined Kris Draper(notes) and Darren McCarty(notes) on the Grind Line—a talent checking unit that was key in the Wings' decade among the NHL's elite teams.
