'WE HAVE TO GO OUT WITH OUR 'A' GAME' Colts Defenders Understand Challenges in Denver

With last Sunday night’s victory over the Giants in the past, the Colts’ defense now turns its focus upon the Denver Broncos’ offense that scored 31 points last week in its win against Seattle.
Denver is averaging 24 points a game, boasts the second-best cheap nfl jerseys
third down efficiency in the NFL (56.7 percent) and presents a very evenly distributed offensive attack.
“They are a tough team and definitely very balanced,” Colts safety Melvin Bullitt said. “They can run the ball and pass it. We just have to stay on our keys. That’s the thing, they are not a team that runs too much or passes too much. So when I say a very balanced team, you have to be patient and let things come to you.”
The Denver running game is not short on options. Broncos running back Knows Hon Moreno leads Denver with 111 rushing yards in 2010, while he led all rookies in 2009 in rushing yards with 947, yards from scrimmage with 1,160 and total touchdowns with nine. Tenth-year veteran Corel Buck halter finished sixth in the NFL last season in yards per rush with 5.4 yards per carry, and Denver also recently added a familiar face to its backfield, former New England Patriot Laurence Maloney.
“Obviously we are definitely familiar with Maloney from his time in New England,” Colts linebacker Gary Brackett said. “He is definitely a very capable back. Buck halter and Moreno are very capable as well. So, we have to (recognize) what runner is in the backfield and what type of runner he is.”
Denver also presents another rushing variation for the Colts with its Wildcat formation run by rookie quarterback Tim Taboo.
Colts’ defensive end Dwight Frenzy talked Wednesday about the unique obstacles Denver presents with its many offensive formations and variations.
“Scheme-wise they do a lot of things and really challenge you mentally,” Frenzy said. “They try to use confusion and different formations and keep you off balance. It is going to be really important for everyone to get mentally prepared for this game.”
Denver quarterback Kyle Orton quietly has become an efficient leader of the Broncos’ offense, and having a full year under his belt obviously has helped with his understanding of the offense. He leads the NFL in third-down efficiency, completing 14-of-19 passes for 181 yards and two scores for a 138.3 QB rating.
In 2009, Orton set the team record for most passing yards (3,802) by a quarterback in the first year with the team, and that total also was a career-best for the former Purdue quarterback.
“I think he gets off of the ball quick and you have to be cognizant of Minnesota Vikings jersey
that,” Brackett said. “So you have to be cognizant of that fact in your drops, you have to set up fast, be able to break downhill when he throws those quick passes.”
Orton’s receiving playmakers consist of Eddie Royal, who leads the team with 13 catches for 163 yards a one score this season along with Brandon Lloyd, who has eight receptions for a team-high 170 yards. Rookie Demetrius Thomas, playing in his first NFL game last week against Seattle, had eight receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Frenzy spoke of the difficulty of getting pressure on Orton due to his complement of receivers and understanding of the pocket.
“Orton does a good job,” Frenzy said. “They protect him, he gets rid of the ball, he is a nice crafty veteran that knows what’s going on and they do a good job in what they do. He does not take too many chances and when they do, they have seven guys in there blocking with two-man routes and they get the ball down the field a little bit.”
Since 2003, the Broncos are second only to the Colts (121) for fewest sacks allowed with 176.
Colts safety Antoine Bethel summed up the Denver offense and shed some light on what it will take for the defense to be successful this Sunday.
“They have a real good offense with the quarterback, running backs and a good, solid receiving corps,” Bethel said. “We have to go out there with our “A” game. Obviously, they put up some numbers last week against Seattle, so they are capable of putting some points up on the board. We just have to play our game.”
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS UPDATEColts jersey

The Colts also announced linebacker Ramon Humber has undergone surgery for a fractured hand. Humber will be out this week against Denver.
Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez continues rehabilitating an ankle injury and Indianapolis Colts jersey
will be out this week. Defensive back Bob Sanders (biceps) will be out this week.
The club also has released offensive tackle Tony Ago from the injured reserve list.

2012 Super Bowl organizers moving ahead with plans

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Indianapolis organizers expect the 2012 Super Bowl to be played on its original date, despite growing concerns that an NFL work stoppage could force postponement or cancellation of the game.
At a news conference Thursday, host committee officials nfl jerseys
said they were moving ''full-speed'' ahead with their plans for Feb. 5, 2012. They outlined a number of initiatives that either have started or will begin in the next several months, and are beginning to line up volunteers for the biggest sporting event Indy has ever hosted.
And it appears everything is on schedule - for now.
''The NFL has instructed us to be ready Feb. 5, 2012, and we will be,'' host committee president Allison Millington said. ''I get concerned about things that I can control, not something that I can't.''
The biggest concern for football fans is a lockout.
NFL Players Association executive director Demiurgic Smith reiterated Wednesday that he is ''100 percent'' certain league owners will lock out players before the start of next season. The current collective bargaining agreement expires in March, and Smith often points to the league's television deals, which will pay the owners whether next season's games are played or not.
Roger Gödel, the NFL commissioner, has argued owners will eventually have to pay that money back if games are canceled.
Players are already preparing for the worst.
As early as the summer of 2009, player representatives instructed teammates to start saving additional money for health insurance and living expenses in case of a lockout. Since last week, seven teams have voted unanimously to decertify the union - a procedural step that would allow the union to continue operating as a group and give players the right to sue owners under an antitrust law that bars boycotts of group organizations.
If the NFLPA does decertify, it is not expected to happen until Bears jersey
after this season.
In Indianapolis, the questions are all about the Super Bowl.
Colts owner Jim Rise and Millington both acknowledged last month that the league had asked city officials to keep blocks of hotel rooms and city venues open for the original Super Bowl weekend, Feb. 4-5, and the following weekend. League spokesman Brian McCarthy later explained both dates were part of Indy's bid for the game, which was awarded the same day NFL owners decided to opt out of the CBA.
Millington also said Thursday that although the committee has stayed in frequent contact with league officials about the labor situation, it has not taken out insurance to cover the costs of the game if it is canceled.
''Our job is to be ready to run the Super Bowl on Feb. 5, 2012, and that's what we're going to do,'' host committee chairman Mark Miles said. ''If it is a week later, we can pick it up and put it down a week later - if that's what you call a contingency plan.''
Committee members are monitoring infrastructure and restoration residential projects on the city's near east side, construction of a new educational and wellness center at Tech High School and an indoor bubble at the University of Indianapolis, where the NFC team will practice during Super Bowl week. It has been dubbed the Super Bowl's legacy project.
They are also making entertainment plans for a downtown street, which is getting an $11 million facelift. Organizers are billing the Georgia Street project as Olympic village meets the Super Bowl.
''It's just going to bleed NFL,'' Miles said. ''There will be a lot of Bills jersey
people who won't be able to go to the game, so we want this to be a place that Hoosiers can get into the ambiance of the of game, and for our guests, we want to give them something to answer the question: Why play in a cold-weather city?''
The hope is that Georgia Street will become a meeting place for city residents before and after the game. But will the game go on as planned?
''We're taking our lead from the NFL,'' Millington said. ''Our direction from them is they're planning to have the game, and we're planning to be ready to put it on.''

24 sep 10 Phillies beat Braves 1-0 for 10th straight win

Indianapolis Colts jersey
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Roy Oswalt(notes) watched Philadelphia’s other two aces do their job, then he outdid them.
Oswalt and a pair of relievers combined on a one-hitter nfl jersey
and the NL East-leading Phillies beat Atlanta 1-0 Wednesday night for their 10th straight win, increasing their bulge over the Braves to six games.
Raul Ibanez(notes) hit an RBI double with two outs in the eighth inning for the only run, helping the two-time NL champions reduce their magic number for clinching their fourth straight division title to four. It was the Phillies’ first home sweep over the Braves since 2001.
“I think the faster we get it done, the better off we’ll be,” manager Charlie Manuel said.
Oswalt allowed just one hit—a clean double by Martin Prado(notes) in the fourth— and one walk in seven scoreless innings.
Atlanta began the day with a one-game lead over San Diego in the wild-card race.
While the Braves used two rookies—Mike Minor(notes) and Brandon Beachy(notes), who made his major league debut on Monday—to start the first two games of a crucial series, the Phillies adjusted their rotation so their three aces would pitch.
Cole Hamels(notes) and Roy Halladay(notes) delivered in the first two games. Oswalt pitched even better, though he didn’t get the win.
“I didn’t want them to do something I couldn’t do,” Oswalt said. “I’m trying to push them as much as possible and they’re doing that off me. Anytime you feed off each other, it helps down the stretch.”
Ryan Madson(notes) (6-2) pitched a perfect eighth for the win. Brad Lidge(notes) finished for his 26th save in 31 chances, earning a save in each game of this series. He retired Prado on a shallow fly to right to leave the tying run at second.
Jonny Venters(notes) (4-3) hit Chase Utley(notes) with a pitch to start Philadelphia’s eighth. After Ryan Howard(notes) grounded into a double play, Jayson Werth(notes) walked.
Ibanez then hit an opposite-field drive that sliced into the Colts jersey
left-field corner. Left fielder Nate McLouth(notes) overthrew the relay man and Werth slid home safely for a 1-0 lead. Philadelphia won with only four hits.
The Phillies are 44-15 since July 21, when they trailed the Braves by seven games. They are 18-3 in September.
A crowd of 45,310 was the 120th straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park. Fans waved their white-and-red “Fightin’ Phils” rally towels, and chanted “Sweep! Sweep!” They had to leave their brooms in the parking lot because those aren’t allowed in the stadium.
Braves starter Tommy Hanson(notes) tossed six scoreless innings, giving up two hits and three walks.
Hanson didn’t allow a hit until one out in the fifth when Carlos Ruiz(notes) lined a double that McLouth slid past. Hanson struck out Shane Victorino(notes) looking at a fastball down the middle to end the inning and strand runners at second and third.
“Oswalt was as good as you can pitch and Hanson was the same,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said. “Hanson was dominating. He’s had no luck. We can’t score runs for him.”
Oswalt is 7-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 11 starts since joining the Phillies. They’re 10-1 in those games. He retired the first 11 batters before Prado lined a double in the fourth.
“He threw the ball as good or better,” Hanson said. “That’s the way it goes.”
Since acquiring Oswalt from the Houston Astros on July 29, the Cowboys jersey
Phillies are 37-15. Oswalt, Hamels and Halladay are 19-6 in 30 starts in that span. The Phillies are 23-7 in those games.
Notes: Utley has reached has safely in 22 straight games. … Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins(notes) and OF Domonic Brown(notes) will face live pitching on Thursday. Rollins has been sidelined since Sept. 8 with tightness in his right hamstring. Brown was scratched on Sept. 6 and hasn’t played since because of tenderness in his right quadriceps. … It was Philadelphia’s first home sweep over the Braves since Sept. 17-19, 2001. The Phillies went 9-0 in Atlanta in 2008. … Atlanta’s Jason Heyward(notes) has reached safely in 27 straight games.

A long list of problems

Cowboys jersey
The players have their own opinions as to what is wrong. Their theories include too much hype, lax practice habits, lack of execution and suffocating expectations.
You name it. The Cowboys did. What you can't find is a nfl jerseys
consensus.
Coaches and players grope to explain the team's dreadful 0-2 start. The trick is to find answers before Sunday's crucial meeting with the Houston Texans.
"We'll change some things that need changing," Phillips said. "I'm looking at several different things."
Kicker is not one of them. David Buehler lives to kick field goals for another game, even after a missed field goal attempt in each of the first two games.
Phillips was purposely vague about what's to come. He wants to work through the scenarios with his staff. Changes in the starting lineup, the rotation, the playbook and practice will all be explored.
The Cowboys coach doesn't want to shout at his players. He wants to analyze and give them something to sink their teeth into. Phillips does not want to overreact, and in truth, there are few major changes that make sense to implement. But it's all on the table.
"We're going to look at everything," Phillips said. "You keep evaluating what you're doing, how you're doing it, what we need to do better along with personnel, along with practice, whatever. I'm looking at a lot of different things right now.
"We need to change the track we're on."
Back on track? These areas are currently derailed and demand attention.
•Scoring offense: No. 24 with an average of 13.5 points.
•Rushing: No. 28 with an average of Vikings jersey
69.5 yards.
•Scoring defense: No. 20 with an average of 20 points.
•Sacks: No. 25 with two.
This is all unfamiliar territory. The Cowboys were never under .500 with Phillips as head coach until they lost the opener. It has been six years since the Cowboys were two games under .500.
Receiver Roy Williams said this start should bring the Cowboys back to earth since the media will now focus on what's wrong rather than Super Bowl aspirations.
Safety Gerald Sensabaugh talked about distractions and a sense of entitlement.
"We should be winning," Sensabaugh said. "There's no excuse for this. We need to be focused as a team and organization on winning football games.
"I think it's too much hype around here, you know what I mean? The Super Bowl is here. Everybody's talking about the Cowboys in the Super Bowl. We ain't won a damn game yet. I don't even want to hear nobody talking about the Super Bowl. Really, can we just talk about the next game?
"There's too much hype."
Cornerback Terence Newman spoke of the players needing to do a better job of policing themselves during practice. Defensive end Igor Olshansky conceded he was shocked by the 0-2 start but doesn't feel drastic changes are in order.
"We've just got to keep doing what we're doing," he said. "I think the formula is in place to win.
"It's just got to click, and it will."
Phillips walks a fine line here. He has preached the virtues of continuity yet must now determine if that has slipped into complacency. The plus is that he feels good about the character of the players, their internal leadership and the fact they will keep their noses to the grindstone.
"The bottom line is we haven't played well," tight end Jason Witten said. "What is the answer? Is it penalties, not executing, turnovers, practice, distractions, expectations? I mean, the bottom line is you've got to find a way to turn it around.
"Our actions have got to speak for all of Colts jersey
us. We've got to play better."
Immediately. Even though it's early in the season, the Cowboys can't afford to wait. To borrow an analogy from Phillips, this is a 16-round fight and his team has already been knocked down twice.
"We're close, but we're too far away," Phillips said. "That's our problem now."

Witten, Jenkins expected to play Sunday

Cowboys jersey
IRVING - The Cowboys expect to have tight end Jason Witten and cornerback Mike Jenkins for Sunday's game at Houston.
Both were injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to Chicago. Jenkins was taken off the field on a cart as a precaution because of a bruised right knee. Witten suffered a concussion when hit by two Bears after a reception.
It's doubtful either player will be cleared to practice nfl jersey
Wednesday, but coach Wade Phillips expects they will practice this week. That paves the way for them to play against the Texans.
"It looks like they will play," Phillips said Monday.
An MRI revealed Jenkins had no ligament damage, and the cornerback said he felt fine. Witten said there are no lingering effects from the hit.
"I didn't feel like it was a concussion," Witten said. "I felt woozy there for a little bit, but everything is fine.
"I feel great. I don't see any reason why I wouldn't be playing this week."
Witten engaged in a heated sidelines discussion with Dr. Robert Fowler of the club's medical staff but was not allowed to return.
"I told him I was fine," Witten said. "But I understand what his role is and what he's trying to do. I just felt I knew what my body felt like more than anyone else. Any competitor is going to tell you that."
Witten said he has no headaches or other symptoms associated with a concussion. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware was diagnosed with a mild concussion last week, and was limited in practice for two days before being fully cleared Friday.
No takeaways: Two weeks into the regular season, and only two Buffalo Bills jersey
teams do not have a takeaway: 0-2 Buffalo and the 0-2 Cowboys.
The Cowboys and Buffalo join three other teams - Baltimore, Houston and Minnesota - on the short list of clubs that do not have an interception. In the win over the Cowboys, Chicago's Jay Cutler had the personal rarity of 29 passes without an interception. Cutler had thrown at least one interception in 23 of his previous 28 games.
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had two interceptions, both on throws that bounced off a receiver.
"That's the way it happens sometimes," secondary coach Dave Campo said. "It's frustrating when you see that happen. We want to get some of those."
Ground game struggles: The shaky running game regressed against Chicago.
Of the Cowboys' 20 carries, seven went for no gain or a loss. In the opener, a loss at Washington, the Cowboys had two runs for no gain or a loss in 21 carries.
"I am concerned about that," Phillips said. "Too many negative plays are hurting us."
Briefly: Keith Brooking appeared in all but one defensive play, and fellow Steelers jersey
inside linebacker Bradie James went the distance for the second consecutive game in the loss to the Bears. Phillips said he was not concerned about their workload at this time, because the opposing offenses have not run an inordinate number of plays. The Bears ran 49 offensive plays, 22 fewer than the Cowboys.

Key call incorrect in Ravens-Bengals

Cowboys jersey
There were plenty of big calls in Week 2, but none bigger than the roughing the passer penalty in the Baltimore-Cincinnati game (see video above). Officials have a tough job and as I have said before, it's virtually impossible to work a perfect game. There are going to be incorrect calls and this week was no exception. My current job is not to criticize officials, but to use the calls that I deem to be correct or incorrect as a vehicle to teach readers and viewers the rules of the game. Here are the five plays this week that are worthy of nfl throwback jerseys
discussion.
THE GAME: Baltimore at Cincinnati
THE SITUATION: Baltimore leading 10-9 with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati has the ball, first-and-10 at the Baltimore 41.
THE PLAY: Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer throws an incomplete pass, but Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs is called for roughing the passer, putting the Bengals at first-and-10 at the Baltimore 26.
THE RESULT: The call on Suggs helps lead the Bengals to the go-ahead 38-yard field goal by Mike Nugent.
MY TAKE: While referees are instructed to err on the side of safety when it comes to protecting the quarterback, I feel the call was incorrect. Suggs made a form tackle on Palmer. And while he did land on top of him, he did not appear to unnecessarily or violently throw the quarterback down and land on top of him with most or all of his weight, which is what the rule states. I can see why the referee made the call that he did, but to me, it was a normal tackle and not a foul.
THE GAME: Pittsburgh at Tennessee
THE SITUATION: Pittsburgh leading 10-3 in the second quarter. Tennessee has the ball, first-and-10 at the Titans 23 with 1:36 left until halftime.
THE PLAY: The Titans' Chris Johnson takes the handoff for 1 yard, but fumbles. It's recovered by Steelers linebacker James Harrison. The replay assistant challenges the fumble ruling.
THE RESULT: The ruling on the field is upheld, which leads to a Steelers field goal, giving Pittsburgh a 13-3 lead.
MY TAKE: The interesting part of this review is that all of the discussion on television focused on the knee not being down when the ball came loose. However, what they should have been talking about was whether the left forearm was on the ground before the ball got knocked out of Johnson’s arm. A runner is considered down by contact if anything other than his hand, foot or the ball touches the ground. Although it was a very close play, I think the left forearm was down and the Titans should have retained possession. This decision led to a field goal by the Steelers, but had nothing to do with the outcome of the game, considering the Titans turned the ball over seven times.
THE GAME: Philadelphia at Detroit
THE SITUATION: Philadelphia trailing 17-14 in the second quarter with 13 seconds left until halftime. The Eagles have the ball, second-and-9 at the Detroit 9.
THE PLAY: Eagles quarterback Michael Vick hits Jeremy Maclin for a touchdown.
THE RESULT: The touchdown gives the Eagles a 21-17 lead. But ...
MY TAKE: I think Maclin pushed off and should have been called for offensive pass New Orleans Saints jersey
interference, which would have negated the touchdown. The rule states that a receiver may not initiate contact with an opponent by shoving or pushing off, thus creating a separation in an attempt to catch a pass. In this case, it appeared to me that Maclin turned into the defender, pushed off and got the separation that he needed to make the catch. Over the years, officials have called more defensive pass interference than offensive pass interference fouls. Recently, the officials have been instructed to focus just as much on the receiver as the defender. While the NFL has gotten better making OPI calls, in my opinion, this is one that should have been called.
THE GAME: Chicago at Dallas
THE SITUATION: Chicago has the ball in the first quarter on third-and-11 from the Dallas 24-yard line.
THE PLAY: The Bears' Jay Cutler is sacked at the Dallas 32 by DeMarcus Ware and Keith Brooking. Two penalties are called — offensive holding on Chicago's Kevin Shaffer, and Brooking is called for unnecessary roughness.
THE RESULT: Offsetting penalties.
MY TAKE: These two penalties offset, even though the holding call is a 10-yard penalty and the unnecessary roughness is a 15-yarder. Fouls by both teams almost always offset each other, even if one is a live-ball foul and the other is a dead-ball foul. One set of double fouls that don't offset is if one team commits a "simple'' 5-yard penalty and the other team commits a major 15-yard penalty. In that case, the simple 5-yard penalty is disregarded and the 15-yard penalty is assessed. That's exactly what happened in the Carolina-Tampa Bay game when the Bucs' Mike Williams was called for a false start and then the Panthers' Greg Hardy was called for a late hit on the quarterback after the false start. The false start was disregarded by rule and the personal foul was enforced. This "5-15'' rule does not apply if there is change of possession on the play. Both of these double-foul situations were correctly enforced.
THE GAME: Chicago at Dallas
THE SITUATION: Dallas leading 14-10 with 3:38 left in the second quarter. Chicago has the ball, first-and-9 at the Dallas 9.
THE PLAY: Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler hits Devin Hester on a 9-yard touchdown pass.
THE RESULT: Dallas challenges the pass completion ruling, and the play is upheld.
MY TAKE: Who would have ever thought that one of the benefits of San Francisco 49ers jersey
certain types of artificial turf is that rubber pellets fly in the air when a player drags his toe trying to complete a catch? The officials actually look for this when making their ruling. Hester clearly dragged his toe and the call was made easier by the visible rubber seen flying through the air on replay.

STRAWBERRY'S PATCH - LEGENDARY SLUGGER RETURNS TO NEW YORK AND RENTS THIS CHELSEA TWO-BEDROOM;

Cowboys jersey
DARRYL Strawberry is standing in the living room of his two-bedroom apartment at Ohm, a new rental building in far west Chelsea.
"You want to see one of my favorite things?" he asks.
The baseball legend hasn't been in this $5,295-per-month apartment long - just a nfl jersey
few months. He and his wife, Tracy still have a five-bedroom house in St. Louis. And while their new 1,050-square-foot rental, with white walls and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto large expanses of the West Side Highway, the Hudson River and New Jersey, is neat and well maintained, it doesn't quite feel lived in. (Strawberry even keeps a packed suitcase next to the bed, in case he needs to travel at a moment's notice.) Strawberry, 48, leaves the living room and disappears into the bedroom.
He returns a moment later with a bag of golf clubs.
"This is my favorite thing," Strawberry says. "My paradise." Yes, one of the greatest sluggers to ever don a New York Mets uniform has traded his baseball bat for a 9-iron and a putter.
(And to make matters more confusing - at least sports-wise - the 6-foot-5inch Strawberry is wearing a Kobe Bryant jersey when we drop by.) "I wish I had picked it up earlier," he says of golf. "I've been playing a lot for a while - before I went into the restaurant business. But I'm too busy now." He adds: "In a great way." The "restaurant business" is the new Strawberry's Sports Grill in Douglaston, Queens. And it's likely the reason Strawberry has little baseball memorabilia from his days as a Met or a Yankee: Much of it has gone to the restaurant.
(But he does keep a few old No. 18 Mets jerseys in the apartment.) What Strawberry's rental doesn't lack are spectacular vistas - from more than 20 floors up.
"It's a great view of New Jersey," Strawberry says, gesturing towards the wall of glass in the living room.
Strawberry, who retired from baseball in 1999, says that he doesn't really like soaking up the New York City scene, so it's no surprise that he and his wife have made their apartment comfy and casual.
The living room has two soft, enormous Ashley Furniture couches facing one of three Samsung flatscreen TVs (Strawberry got the TVs gratis when he made a personal appearance at an electronics store.)
Opening onto the living room is the stainless-steel kitchen, which features white Chicago Bears jersey
polished counters and one of Strawberry's most prized possessions, a black Hamilton Beach coffeemaker.
Off of the living room/ kitchen are two separate, simply decorated bedrooms. One is where he and his wife sleep. Next to their bed is another of Strawberry's most cherished items, a brown leather "On Wings of Eagles" book of scripture. (Tracy is a nondenominational minister.).
The other bedroom is a guestroom for friends or one of Darryl and Tracy's combined eight children, should they be in town.
But one gets the sense that Strawberry's heart isn't quite in Manhattan - it was the opening of his restaurant that lured him back to NYC.
"This is the first time I've ever lived in the city," he says. "I can't believe I say I live in the city . . . but I figured, 'Well, if I opened a restaurant, I need to be here.' "
Despite the association almost every baseball fan of a certain age has with Strawberry and New York, he grew up in Los Angeles. When he was on the Mets, he lived on Long Island, in Roslyn. When he was on the Yankees, he lived in Fort Lee, NJ.
With his rowdy ballplayer days long behind him, Strawberry likes having simple nights in his apartment.
I'm not a go-out-to-eat person," he says.
When my wife's home, we go to the grocery store. We're not like most New Yorkers - we're Midwestern people." Strawberry says he vetoed the idea of opening his restaurant in Manhattan and opted for Queens, where his fan base remains fanatical.
("Trust me," he told his business partners when they were discussing location.
"This is Queens. This is my territory - people there don't forget.") But if Strawberry does want a taste of Manhattan nightlife, he won't have to venture past his building.
Even though it's on 11th Avenue and a good hike from the subway, Ohm has a reputation as a lively place to reside. All summer long, young singles mixed at cookouts and parties there, including one thrown by Friends of the High Line. (The nearby elevated park is being extended.) But Strawberry hasn't really taken advantage of New Orleans Saints jersey
his new building's many amenities.
Ohm residents eager to see him at one of the building's Knitting Factorycurated rock concerts in the lobby atrium shouldn't hold their breath. And when asked if he uses the building's game room or gym, Strawberry laughs.

Errant fielding by Twins' Delmon Young could be sign of weary legs

Cowboys jersey
No one has ever accused Delmon Young of being a Gold Glove outfielder, and, really, that's not why he's here. Manager Ron Gardenhire puts Young in left field every night because he's hitting .316 and has driven in a team-high 84 runs.
But Young's defense seems to be getting worse, a troubling sign for a nfl throwback jerseys
team trying to fend off Chicago in the American League Central. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Young might be tired. He played his 107th game Saturday after playing only 108 last season.
"He's fine. He has been playing great," Gardenhire said. "He has been playing a lot. I'm worried that he's a little tired because he's been playing every day. It's not easy plays (he has been missing) out there -- sliding, diving plays. Like I said, I'm more worried that he might be getting a little worn down."
Young has only four errors, but that doesn't tell the whole story. It has been an adventure in left, and he has had a particularly tough 10 days.
During a 2-1 win Aug. 5 at Tampa Bay -- a game Young won with a 13th-inning single -- he misplayed a blooper into a double in the ninth when he charged it, missed and kicked the ball to second base, leading to a blown save.
During a three-game series in Chicago on Aug. 10-12, Young gave Paul Konerko an extra base on a long single by airmailing the throw past second in a 12-6 victory and nearly made a nice sliding play on a liner only to have it bounce out of his glove in a 6-1 victory.
In Friday's 4-3 victory over Oakland, Young played Jack Cust's long fly to the track into a run-scoring double in the third inning, then missed a sinking liner by Kurt Suzuki in the seventh and put him on second, as the tying run, by trying to throw out Coco Crisp at third.
"Throwing the ball to the wrong base and letting the tying run get to second, that bothered me more than missing the play," Gardenhire said. "Those are the things; you get up and throw the ball to the right base, and those are things you can't miss. You keep the double play in order, and he had no chance at third base. And those are the biggest problems."
None of the plays cost the Twins a victory, but as the playoff race winds down, each play gets magnified, and the Twins have little room for error as they battle neck-and-neck with the Chicago White Sox. It's a difficult position for Gardenhire, who needs Young's bat but also needs solid defensive play, especially as the bullpen starts a Saints jersey
month without its best lefty, Jose Mijares (knee).
"Maybe (I need to) give him a day here and there and see what we can do to help him out, because he was playing great defense here for a while," the manager said. "He has had some rough outings the last couple of times, the last two or three games, but it hasn't been easy plays."
Young declined an interview request. He was perfect in the field in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Oakland, and went 0 for 3 at the plate. In his past 10 games he's hitting .204 (9 for 44) with three runs batted in.
First-base coach Jerry White, a former major league outfielder with Montreal and St. Louis, said he isn't worried about Young's defense. "Maybe that's because I was an outfielder, and I know what he goes through," he said.
If he saw a red flag, White added, he'd say something to the manager, and that hasn't happened.
"He does OK," Gardenhire said. "There are a lot of balls hit out there, and he plays every night. Like I said, I'm more worried about that I (might be) wearing him down, his legs. We're going to have to guard against that and give him a break possibly. Maybe tomorrow."
Briefly: Joe Mauer usually DH's on Sundays after a night game, but Gardenhire said Mauer might catch today in the series finale against the A's.
"We'll see how we go. It's a possibility he could play," he said. "He DH'd (Friday) night, and we'll just see how he feels. I'll talk with him in the morning."
J.J Hardy (left wrist) was available Saturday night, but Gardenhire wants San Diego Chargers jersey
to give him the entire series off, then see if he can play against Chicago. Hitting has been the biggest irritant. "I'm just trying to give him as many days as I can," Gardenhire said.
Gardenhire said Nick Punto (hamstring) likely will be activated from the disabled list in time for Tuesday's game against the White Sox at Target Field.

Tabata, Walker spark Pirates victory

Cowboys jersey
Jose Tabata and Neil Walker are forcing Rookie of the Year voters to give them a look.
On Friday night at PNC Park, they ignited a pair of football jerseys
rallies and scored four runs in the Pirates' 8-5 victory against the Washington Nationals.
"They're fun to watch," manager John Russell said. "I'm glad they're finally getting on the radar, as far as rookies to watch."
If Russell had a vote, which of his two newbies would get it?
"Both," Russell said with a grin.
When Tabata and Walker reached base in the third, Garrett Jones drove them in. The rookies got on again in the fifth and Jones, Pedro Alvarez and Ryan Doumit followed with RBI hits.
Walker went 1 for 3, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games. He is one shy of becoming the first Pirates rookie switch-hitter to reach 100 hits in a season since Johnny Ray set the club mark with 182 in 1982.
Tabata singled twice, giving him 92 hits in 74 games since his June 9 promotion. He and Walker are on the verge of becoming the first pair of Pirates rookies to get 100 hits in a season since Tony Womack (178) and Jose Guillen (133) in 1997.
"It's great to be a part of this," said Walker, who like Tabata upped his batting average to .310. "And I'm looking forward to improving next year. I know we're capable of good things here."
Walker laughed when asked what he'd do with a Rookie of the Year ballot.
"Aw, I don't care," he said. "Those kind of things are great, but I feel better on nights when we get victories. We're playing pretty good baseball around here now. That's the most important thing."
At least one of Walker's teammates might be trying to sway the voters. Across the clubhouse, closer Joel Hanrahan emerged wearing a Pirates T-shirt with Walker's No. 18 and "Pittsburgh Kid" on the back.
"He's just messing with me," Walker said.
Pirates starter Zach Duke (7-12) struggled in three of his five-plus innings. The lefty allowed four runs Bills jersey
on five hits, walked three and struck out five.
Washington's Danny Espinosa began the third with a solo homer, his first in the majors. He was called up Wednesday after hitting 22 homers in 123 games with Triple-A Syracuse.
In the bottom of the inning, Ronny Cedeno doubled. He went to third on Duke's sacrifice bunt and scored on Andrew McCutchen's sacrifice fly.
Tabata's single to right kept the inning going. Walker walked — just his 20th free pass in 339 plate appearances.
"That's our job," Walker said. "We get on for guys like Jones and Alvarez. Those are the big drive-in (runs) guys. Neither of us is trying to do much more than set the table for those guys."
Jones smacked an opposite-field double to the North Side Notch, scoring Tabata and Walker. In the fourth, Doumit homered to right-center to make it 4-1.
The Pirates chased Livan Hernandez (9-10) while scoring four runs in the fifth. With one out, Tabata and Walker each singled. Jones followed with a blast off the top of the center-field wall — the ball missed going out by about three inches — for an RBI double.
Alvarez hit a laser to right-center for a two-run double. Former Pirate Miguel Batista replaced Hernandez and yielded Doumit's single, which scored Alvarez.
Duke left after putting the first four batters on base in the sixth. Sean Gallagher took over 49ers jersey
and gave up a pair of run-scoring hits.
"My control got a little bit erratic, and that got me into trouble," Duke said. "Fortunately, the offense did a good job."

Hunter Hillenmeyer uncertain about his future

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Three days after he was placed on season-ending injured reserve with lingering effects from a concussion, Hunter Hillenmeyer(notes) said he feels “totally fine.”
But the Chicago Bears linebacker, an eight-year veteran, is nfl jerseys
at peace with the organization’s decision to shut him down.
Hillenmeyer suffered a concussion in the Bears’ third preseason game with the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 28 when he had a helmet-to-helmet collision with a lineman. He’s known to have had one previous concussion in the 2006 season opener at Green Bay, and Hillenmeyer acknowledged he’s had “several,” meaning there have been others.
The academic All-American from Vanderbilt has been out front with the NFLPA when it comes to discussions about concussions. He’s already pledged to donate his brain to research after his playing days are over.
But he can’t say at this point if he will play again.
“I don't know," Hillenmeyer said. "That's kind of a big question. One of the hardest things with concussions is you don't really know. I wouldn't have played in the first game if I didn't think I was better. Even when I got checked out at halftime of that game the doctors say there's no way to know for sure that this is a lingering effect of a concussion. It could be from allergies, there's 100 things that could cause dizziness, it could be from taking too many energy supplements before the game.
"With my history, I've had a few of these so, as hard as it was to Colts jersey
stomach after ending up on IR after playing one half of one game I respect their decision to err on the side of caution.”
Hillenmeyer was cleared to return before the season opener last week. He suffered dizziness in the first half of the game and was pulled at halftime.
“I still fought a battle at halftime of that day," he said. "I'm like, 'I know I should tell the doctors but I don't want to come out of the game.' I feel like if I am fighting that battle in my head, then you know there are guys who have a much less secure roster spot and aren't vested veterans who know that they don't have to worry about the financial part of the situation, they might not even know and not care.
"The system is never going to be perfect. Anything they could do like that whether it's adding people to the roster or finding something where it's not an all-or-nothing, IR-and-you're-done for-the-year situation, I think would set up incentives for players to be more candid about their symptoms."
Will he consider retirement?
"One of the reasons I wanted to wait a couple days before I talked to you guys because I wanted to kind of let things like that digest," Hillenmeyer said. "I'm certainly not ready to say that at this point. I know I'm obviously done for the year and that gives me at a minimum eight or nine months before I'm doing football-related activities again and that's certainly enough time to evaluate what I'm going to do down the road.
"I have friends around the league that have been done or while they Cowboys jersey
were still playing it would get to May or whatever when they start running around for OTA's, and they would have symptoms again and I have never had anything like that, and in that respect I feel like I am one of the lucky ones that has had these things managed correctly."

Arizona coach says Wells to be game-time decision

Dallas Cowboys jersey

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Beanie Wells(notes) was limited in practice again on Friday and Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt says the running back’s participation against Atlanta on Sunday will be a game-time decision.
Wells has been limited in practice all week because of nfl jersey
a bruised right knee. He gave the knee a strong test on Thursday and insisted afterward that he would “definitely” go through a full practice on Friday. But Whisenhunt said the knee swelled up a bit overnight so Wells was limited again.
The second-year pro from Ohio State, Arizona’s leading rusher last season, sat out last week’s season-opening victory at St. Louis. He was injured against the Washington Redskins in the final preseason game on Sept. 2.
Wells was listed as questionable for Atlanta, as were teammates defensive end Kenny Iwebema(notes) (knee) and safety Hamza Abdullah(notes) (groin).
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP)—Atlanta Falcons receiver Michael Jenkins(notes) will miss Sunday’s game against Arizona because of a shoulder injury.
Jenkins had not practiced all week and the Falcons ruled him out Friday. He was injured six weeks ago in a scrimmmage before the first preseason game and hasn’t had any contact since then.
Harry Douglas(notes) started in place of Jenkins in the season opener, a 15-9 loss at Pittsburgh.
Safety Erik Coleman(notes) has not practiced all week because of Steelers jersey
an injured left knee. He was hurt against the Steelers but returned to finish the game. The team listed him as questionable for Sunday.
If Coleman can’t go, second-year player William Moore(notes) would likely get the start.
Minnesota coach Brad Childress didn’t have anything to say about trade-bait wide receiver Vincent Jackson(notes), who could be suiting up for the Vikings well before Sidney Rice(notes) does again.
The Vikings are reportedly in the market for Jackson, who will be eligible to return to action after three more games if the San Diego Chargers trade the talented playmaker.
The Vikings are in big-time need for help, especially after a rough first game by quarterback Brett Favre(notes). If the offense struggles Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, the Vikings could become even more desperate. But they’ll have to work out a trade for Jackson and give him a contract he desires.
“He's really not a guy I'm able to speak about for the fact that he's Vikings jersey
their property," Childress said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I wouldn't get into any speculation on anybody on anybody else's roster."
Rice is sidelined and Percy Harvin(notes), who missed nearly all of training camp with a migraine, has a hip injury. Harvin is expected to play Sunday.

I think you’ll see, throughout the league

The Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals both had poor offensive performances in their openers, although there were plenty of reasons for the lack of production.
Two teams looking to see their sluggish offenses move in the right direction play Sunday at the Georgia Dome in the teams’ first meeting since a memorable playoff game two years ago.
It wasn’t surprising Atlanta (0-1) fared poorly in last Sunday’s nfl throwback jerseys
opener on the road against a powerful Pittsburgh defense in a 15-9 overtime loss. Michael Turner(notes) was held to 42 yards on 19 carries.
“I think you’ll see, throughout the league, the most improvement usually comes between Week 1 and Week 2,” coach Mike Smith(notes) said. “Fortunately for us, we have a lot of things we can improve on.”
It was even less surprising Arizona (1-0) had problems with the ball in its 17-14 victory at St. Louis. Derek Anderson(notes), installed as the starting quarterback after Matt Leinart(notes) was released, lost one of four Cardinals fumbles and only found Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald(notes) three times for 43 yards.
One of those catches was a 21-yard touchdown with 6:13 left that proved to be the difference. Fitzgerald missed the last three preseason games with a bruised knee and has yet to develop chemistry with Anderson.
“We’ll be good,” Anderson said. “Obviously not having him for a month or three weeks throws a wrench in things. I don’t know how he exactly feels, but the man shows a lot of toughness to go out there and play. I had a knee injury in the past and I know it’s tough to trust it and it’s tough to do the things that you really want to do.”
Arizona beat Atlanta 30-24 at home two years ago in the playoffs en route to its first Super Bowl. The Falcons led 17-14 at halftime before Cardinals nose tackle Darnell Dockett(notes) forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown on the first series of the second half to give Arizona the lead for good.
“You know, I felt like we were a better team than those San Francisco 49ers jersey
guys, and we just kind of let it slip away,” said Falcons receiver Roddy White(notes) this past offseason.
Fitzgerald had six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown in that contest - the first in the postseason for Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt, a Georgia native who starred in college at Georgia Tech. For Atlanta, Ryan and Smith were both in their first seasons at the time.
“I think it has no bearing on it whatsoever, and again, that was a game that was played two years ago,” Smith told the Falcons’ official website. “Their roster has changed significantly, our roster has changed significantly, so I really don’t (think it’s relevant).”
The Falcons ranked second in the league in rushing that year before slipping to 15th last season. Turner’s production dropped from 1,699 yards to 871 as he was bothered by an ankle injury, and he credited the Steelers as the main reason for his poor output last week.
“We just have come back and clean some things up and just go from there,” Turner said. “Everything was not clean out there, but it’s not going to be clean out there every time. We still have to make some plays.”
Anderson was not helped in his Cardinals debut by running back Tim Hightower(notes), who carried 13 times for 54 yards and lost two fumbles.
Hightower, though, may get another chance to start. Beanie Wells(notes) sat out the opener with a sore knee, and will be a game-time decision Sunday. The former Ohio State star led Arizona with 793 yards as a rookie in 2009.
Anderson completed 22 of 41 passes for 297 yards despite taking a hard hit to his chest in the third quarter.
“I think you have to judge it by how he finished the game and how he hung in Buffalo Bills jersey
there,” Whisenhunt said.
Ryan completed 27 of 44 passes for 252 yards against the Steelers. White had 13 catches for 111 yards - the eighth-highest total in Week 1.
The Cardinals have dropped their last four visits to Atlanta since a 27-10 win in the 1993 season finale.

Late own goal sees Spartak stun Marseille

Indianapolis Colts jersey
MARSEILLE, France (AFP) - A cruel own goal by Cesar Azpilicueta saw French champions Marseille slump to a 1-0 defeat at home to Spartak Moscow in their Champions League Group F opener on Wednesday.
Marseille, the only French side ever to win Europe's top cup competition, created football jerseys
almost all the game's best chances but saw Lucho Gonzalez waste their clearest opportunity when he headed wide of an unguarded goal.
The Russians took swift advantage, with Dmitri Kombarov's low left-wing cross flicking off Azpilicueta and squirming between Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda's legs in the 81st minute.
Andre-Pierre Gignac made his Champions League debut as a second-half substitute and he almost rescued a last-gasp equaliser with a right-footed strike that hit the inside of the left-hand post in injury time.
Marseille controlled possession in the first half, but had only a couple of long-range efforts from Benoit Cheyrou to show for their territorial dominance when Spartak began to assert themselves.
Alex shot over after Marseille midfielder Edouard Cisse was dispossessed in midfield, while Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Welliton, the current top scorer in the Russian Premier League, narrowly failed to connect with an Alex free-kick.
The hosts rallied again before the break and visiting goalkeeper Andriy Dykan had to push away an acrobatic scissor-kick by Cheyrou in first-half injury time.
Didier Deschamps's side stepped up their onslaught after the break, with Brandao shooting narrowly wide from 25 yards and testing Dykan with a header before the Spartak shot-stopper had to tip away a fierce Taye Taiwo drive.
Valbuena's shot on the turn drew another good save from Dykan with 15 minutes remaining.
Moments later Lucho spurned Marseille's best chance of Indianapolis Colts jersey
the night when he directed Valbuena's inch-perfect cross wide with the goal gaping.
Azpilicueta's unfortunate intervention silenced Stade Velodrome soon after, and allowed Spartak to strike a potentially crucial blow in their bid to join likely group winners Chelsea in reaching the knockout phase.

Chelsea routs Zilina 4-1 in Champions League

Indianapolis Colts jersey
ZILINA, Slovakia (AP)—A high-scoring Chelsea proved too good for Zilina in their Champions League opener Wednesday as the English champions eased their way to a comfortable 4-1 win.
Following a perfect start to the Premier League season, Chelsea jumped out to a nfl jerseys
3-0 lead after just 28 minutes against tournament newcomer Zilina, led by two goals within four minutes by Nicolas Anelka.
Michael Essien opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game and Daniel Sturridge added another in the second half before Tomas Oravec scored a consolation goal for Zilina in the 55th.
“In front, we played very well,” Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said. “We had a lot of opportunities.”
Chelsea’s powerful attack may have been theoretically weakened by the absence of striker Didier Drogba, who was suspended for two games by UEFA after receiving a red card in a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League in March.
It was not.
Ancelotti fielded three strikers, with Daniel Sturridge joining Anelka and Florent Malouda up front instead, a decision that was working well.
Although Zilina started with an attempt to pressure early on and earned a corner in the first minute, it took just several minutes before Chelsea took charge.
The first goal was a result of a perfect fluent move that started with Yossi Benayoun’s precise through pass for Nicolas Anelka, who broke down the left to provide a cross that was left by Florent Malouda for Essien to score with a right-footed low drive from the edge of Dallas Cowboys jersey
the area.
Zilina replied with a curling free kick by Robert Jez that tested goalkeeper Petr Cech three minutes later. Babatounde Bello’s header in the 22nd also forced Cech into making a diving save.
“Zilina created chances but didn’t convert them,” Cech said.
In another quick move by the visitors in the 24th minute, Malouda chipped a pass over the defense for Anelka to send a low, clinical left-foot drive from inside the area into the back of the net inside the far post, giving goalkeeper Martin Dubravka no chance.
Chelsea captain John Terry had returned to the squad for Saturday’s 3-1 win over West Ham after recovering from a hamstring injury, and he started again Wednesday and set up the third for Anelka.
Terry rose high in the area to hit the crossbar off Malouda’s corner, and Anelka easily tapped in the rebound to make it 3-0.
Three minutes after halftime, Benayoun set up the fourth with another precise pass from the middle of the field that set Sturridge free.
Zilina pulled one back through an unmarked Tomas Oravec, who received the ball from a deflection by Branislav Ivanovic after Cech had failed to hold on to a cross.
“It was my mistake,” Cech said.
Midfielder Frank Lampard, who has been sidelined following hernia Indianapolis Colts jersey
surgery during the recent international break, and defender Ashley Cole did not travel with the team to the northwestern Slovak city. Long-term injured defender Jose Bosingwa was also absent.
“Chelsea showed how strong a team it is,” Zilina coach Pavel Hapal said. “It was a good lesson for us.”

Packers' Grant out for season

Colts jersey
As first reported by FOXSports.com, the Packers have lost running back Ryan Grant for the season with right leg and ankle injuries. The team announced Tuesday that Grant had been placed on injured reserve. The injury occurred midway through the second quarter of nfl jersey
Sunday’s 27-20 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
Grant picked up 18 yards on a run with 6:07 remaining before halftime and emerged from a pileup in obvious pain. He limped one-footed across the sideline and was headed toward the tunnel to the locker room before the Packers’ medical personnel could assist him.
The Packers were expecting a huge year from Grant, who Dallas Cowboys jersey
has rushed for more than 1,200 yards in each of the last two seasons, and are now scrambling for a replacement. Prior to the injury, Grant had gained 45 yards on eight carries. Backup Brandon Jackson rushed 18 times for 63 yards in Grant's absence.
After the game, Grant was Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
seen limping to the team bus wearing an orthopedic boot.

NFL reminds clubs of media policy

Steelers jersey
NEW YORK (AP)
The NFL sent a memo Tuesday reminding all 32 teams of its equal access and conduct policy toward the media following a TV Azteca reporter's comments that the Jets made her uncomfortable in their locker room last weekend.
''Women are a common part of the sports media,'' the memo said, and included the nfl throwback jerseys
policy. ''By law, women must be granted the same rights to perform their jobs as men. Please remember that women reporters are professionals and should be treated as such. ''
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello also sent an email to the Association of Women in Sports Media restating league policy.
Reporter Ines Sainz, who works for the Mexican network, said she was uncomfortable Saturday in the Jets' locker room, where a few players made catcalls as she waited with two male co-workers to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez, who is of Mexican descent. An assistant coach also seemed to deliberately throw footballs to players near where Sainz was standing on the sideline during practice.
The NFL also reacted Tuesday when Clinton Portis, the outspoken running back for the Washington Redskins, said in his weekly appearance on a radio: ''I think you put women reporters in the locker room in position to see guys walking around naked, and you sit in the locker room with 53 guys, and all of the sudden you see a nice woman in Indianapolis Colts jersey
the locker room. I think men are going to tend to turn and look and want to say something to that woman.''
Aiello said the comments were ''clearly inappropriate, offensive, and have no place in the NFL.''
Then the Redskins issued a statement by Portis, who said he was ''wrong to make the comments'' and that he respects the job reporters do.
The Redskins said they ''will take the necessary steps'' to remind players about acting in a professional manner.
''I didn't address it with the team, but I did talk to Clinton,'' Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday. ''I think everybody read Clinton's apology, and my conversation with him is private, but I think he said what he needed to say.''
League policy further states that women reporters are ''assigned to cover NFL teams for the same reasons as their male counterparts - because they are professional reporters with an interest in sports. When female reporters are in your locker room, they are there in a professional capacity.''
AWSM said it was in contact with the NFL about Portis' remarks and appreciated the league's swift response.
Jets coach Rex Ryan said league representatives spoke to specific players on Tuesday as part of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
its investigation into what happened. He also volunteered to talk to the NFL.

Vick makes the most of his opportunity

Steelers jersey
Michael Vick's dazzling performance in the Philadelphia Eagles' season-opening loss to Green Bay was even more impressive considering how long it had been since the former Pro Bowl quarterback played meaningful minutes in the NFL.
A total of 1,350 days, to be exact. The last time Vick started a football jerseys
game with the Atlanta Falcons was on Dec. 31, 2006.
In football terms, that's an eternity.
Yet there he was, the same old No. 7, once known for throwing a football harder and farther than just about anyone. Back then, Vick was just as exciting running as the best running backs because of his ability to slice one way, cut the other way and race by everybody.
Four years later, he was doing it again.
''It was gratifying to go out and have fun playing the game of football, playing the way I like to play and playing the way the game is dictated and just have fun,'' Vick said Wednesday.
''Sometimes we have a tendency to make the game more serious than what it is and put a lot of pressure on ourselves, which is normal, which is good,'' he added, ''because you have to do that in order to bring the best out of yourself.''
If Kevin Kolb can't play Sunday because of a concussion, Vick will make his first start in 45 months when the Eagles (0-1) visit the Detroit Lions (0-1).
Instead of a half, he'll get four quarters to showcase his skills and silence the critics who said he'd never resuscitate his career after spending 18 months in federal prison for his role in a dogfighting operation.
''My primary focus is to put this team in position to win,'' Vick said. ''That's the ultimate goal. You can't go out and try to prove yourself because that adds more pressure to this game.''
Vick already did enough to create a quarterback controversy among fans and media in Philadelphia. But there's no question who the No. 1 guy is for the Eagles. Coach Andy Reid insists Kolb will be the starter when he's healthy.
''I don't want to slight Michael at all in this, because I am so happy for this kid and the progress that he's made since being incarcerated, in both life and on the football field, and he's worked so stinking hard to get himself to this position,'' Reid said. ''He did a great job. On the other hand, Kevin's the starting quarterback for this football team.''
Vick has become the people's choice among the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately crowd, though. That's quite the turnaround for a guy who was greeted by protests from animal rights activists and outraged fans when he signed with the Eagles last summer.
Vick saw limited action playing behind Donovan McNabb and Kolb. He threw 13 passes, ran 24 times and accounted for just 181 yards and three touchdowns while mostly running a variation of the wildcat offense.
Clearly, Vick wasn't the same guy who revolutionized his position, set rushing records and routinely made head-spinning, highlight-reel plays during six seasons in Atlanta.
By the time he was 25, Vick was an iconic figure who moved merchandise - video games, high-priced sneakers, replica jerseys - and made the Falcons so popular that a franchise that used to have trouble selling out games had a waiting list for season tickets.
He also had a 10-year, $130 million contract that was the richest deal in NFL history.
He lost everything when he went to jail, but the Eagles gave him a second chance, and he's done everything possible to turn his life and career around.
''Since the day I got here, I've been working as hard as I can and as diligently as I can to get better,'' Vick said. ''You want to strive to be great and you want to be perfect. We all know you can't be perfect, but you want to strive for perfection. That's what we try to do''
After missing two years, Vick obviously needed time to work himself back into football shape. He also had to learn a new offense and improve different aspects of his game. Vick had success in Atlanta, leading the Falcons to the NFC championship game against the Eagles in just his second full season as a starter in 2004, but he was far from a polished quarterback.
McNabb was an ideal mentor because they had similar skills, and Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg are excellent teachers. And for 13 months, Vick has improved.
''The system that we're running here, he's done very well at picking it up,'' Reid said, ''and he's Minnesota Vikings jersey
working very hard not only condition-wise, but also just the fundamentals of playing.''
Kolb and the rest of the offense looked awful in the first half against the Packers in the first game in the post-McNabb era. Then his backup came in, started making plays and nearly rallied the Eagles to a comeback victory. The Packers held on for a 27-20 win.
Vick completed 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown, and scrambled for 103 yards.
Anyone who thought Vick had lost a step should check the tape. All those teams who showed no interest when the Eagles put Vick on the trading block in the offseason might be reconsidering.
Vick demonstrated his uncanny escapability, displayed his lightning-quick speed and showed off his powerful arm. He eluded sacks, outran tacklers and fired throws on the run.
''I had the old feel back,'' Vick said.
His swagger, too.
''I still feel like I can play at a high level,'' Vick said. ''I feel like if I had been out there for four quarters, maybe we would have had a chance to win the game. I feel like I'm like 25 or 26 again, even though that's not the case.''
The 30-year-old Vick perhaps feels younger because his body hasn't taken a pounding since '06, when he became the only QB in history to run for 1,000 yards.
If he sticks to the game plan, he won't have to run around like that anymore.
''In this offense, Marty allows you to get into a rhythm,'' Vick said. ''Play-calling is everything and putting guys in the right positions and telling them what to do and they do exactly what you tell them to do, then you're going to excel, you're going to be successful.
Here, you have no choice but to get better in the passing game,'' he added. ''It's like a passing camp during the summer.''
Vick may have a tougher time as a starter this week.
The Packers didn't plan for Vick, and they had a comfortable lead in the second half, so they played more of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
a prevent defense and backed off blitzing. The Lions will have a chance to prepare, likely assigning a spy to limit Vick's scrambling.
''It's important that he focuses in on being in that pocket and throwing the football, and he's done that since he's got here,'' Reid said. ''He's really handled that very well.''

Dolphins re-sign DE Dotson, OLB Walden

Colts jersey

The Dolphins re-signed DE Lionel Dotson(notes) and OLB Erik Walden(notes) on Tuesday and cut recently acquired DE Clifton Geathers(notes).
Dotson, a seventh-round pick in football jersey
2008, didn't make the 53-man squad and signed a practice-squad offer from the Broncos. Walden has been a primary member of the Dolphins' special-teams unit in his two seasons.
The way we Dallas Cowboys jersey
see it
Both players re-signed add to positions where guys were hurt Sunday. Rookie DE Jared Odrick(notes) has a deep thigh bruise and likely will not play in Week Two. OLB Ikaika Alama-Francis(notes) missed Week One's game because of an illness. Walden should be a big help on Minnesota Vikings jersey
special teams, as returner Clifton Smith rarely had room to run against the Bills. The Dolphins also continued to stay young in their acquisitions as opposed to re-signing veteran DEs Marques Douglas(notes) or Charles Grant(notes).

WWE star The Miz calls out Ochocinco

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Chad Ochocinco’s(notes) absence from Cincinnati’s final offensive play of the first half in the season opener against New England didn’t just make headlines in NFL circles. It made its way into the world of professional wrestling, as well.
The Bengals wide receiver, reality TV star and lover of football jersey
Twitter is hosting the season premiere of WWE Monday Night Raw in Cincinnati this evening. And midway through his opening promo in the center of the ring, Ocho was interrupted by WWE United States champion and Ohio native Mike “The Miz” Mizanin — simply The Miz to followers of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
the WWE.
After referring to the Bengals as the “Bungles” and suggesting that the jersey number “85” reflects the number of dropped passes Ocho will have this year, the wideout responded with his signature “Child Please” remark.
Ocho then was able to get the last laugh when he selected the opponent for The Miz's submission bout this evening — submission-machine Daniel Bryan, whom The Miz will face in a title match at WWE’s next pay-per-view event.
And, no, Ocho did not leave his scheduled in-ring Indianapolis Colts jersey
segment early with T.O. — in case you were wondering. Whether he will be around for the whole Raw show, however, is to be determined.

cGahee TD helps Ravens to 10-6 lead through 3

Dallas Cowboys jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Willis McGahee(notes) squeaked into the end zone from 1 yard out with 6 seconds left in the first half, helping the Baltimore Ravens head into the fourth quarter with a 10-6 lead over the New York Jets in the teams’ season opener Monday night.
Billy Cundiff(notes) made a 46-yard field goal with just over a minute left in nfl jersey
the second quarter, but Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) was called for running into the kicker. Ravens coach John Harbaugh chose to accept the penalty and leave his offense on the field.
After two incompletions toward T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes), Joe Flacco(notes) again threw to his newest receiver into the end zone—and rookie Kyle Wilson(notes) was called for pass interference.
After McGahee ran for no gain and Flacco overthrew Le’Ron McClain(notes), McGahee scooted over the goal line for the lead that capped an 11-play drive.
The Jets had led 6-0 to that point on two field goals by Nick Folk(notes), but it was a sloppy first half for New York, which was called for 10 penalties that cost New York 100 yards.
New York appeared to seize momentum before the Ravens’ scoring drive when Antonio Cromartie(notes) picked off Flacco and returned it 66 yards—helped by two huge blocks by Darrelle Revis(notes) and Bart Scott(notes)—to give the Jets the ball at the Ravens 31.
But, two plays later, Shonn Greene(notes) fumbled after a 2-yard gain and gave the Ravens the ball.
Cundiff made it 10-6 by kicking a 25-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. The drive was helped by catches of 38 and 27 yards by Anquan Boldin(notes), both against Wilson.
Baltimore outgained New York 205-91 at that point, and had 15 first downs compared to the Jets’ three.
Folk got the Jets on the board with a 23-yarder 4:06 into the game that was set up by Rex Ryan’s aggressive defense.
Shaun Ellis(notes) and Bryan Thomas(notes) sacked Flacco on the Ravens’ first possession, knocking the ball loose. Sione Pouha(notes) recovered to give the Jets the ball at the Ravens 11.
After a 2-yard run by LaDainian Tomlinson(notes), a 4-yard catch by Dustin Keller(notes) and an incomplete pass toward Edwards, Folk gave the Jets the lead 4:06 into the game.
The Ravens were driving on their next possession when Vernon Gholston(notes) stripped McGahee of the ball, and Pouha recovered his second fumble of the game.
Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins(notes) left the game during that drive after hurting his left knee. The 10-year veteran, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee midway through last season, was caught in a pileup on a tackle of McClain. Jenkins immediately Dallas Cowboys jersey
clutched his left knee and remained on the turf for a few minutes, then got up and limped to the sideline. He was ruled out for the game.
Folk kicked a 28-yarder with 8:16 left in the first half, giving New York 6-0 lead.
The Jets could have had more on the drive, when Keller caught a long pass from Mark Sanchez(notes) to put the ball near the goal line. But, an illegal shift by Edwards negated the play.
The start was delayed 25 minutes because of lightning. It marked the first regular-season game for the Jets at the $1.6 billion New Meadowlands Stadium, which they share with the Giants.
The Giants opened the season on Sunday with a 31-18 victory over Carolina.
It was Ryan’s first game as Jets coach against the Ravens, the team he was hired away from following the 2008 season after 10 years as an assistant, including the last four as the defensive coordinator.
Ryan and Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis(notes) engaged in some trash-talk during the week, with the Baltimore star taking exception to his former coach’s big talk about New York’s Super Bowl hopes.
There was a little chippiness right before the game, too, as Baltimore’s Ray Rice(notes) and Ellis were woofing at each other around midfield. Rice tossed the ball he was holding toward Ellis’ head, and Scott grabbed the ball and zinged it toward Rice as he was jogging away.
It’s been a tumultuous week for the Jets, the stars of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” this summer. They are being investigated by the NFL for how they treated a female television reporter at practice at Saturday. The league is also looking into a claim by an unidentified team that a workout session put together by Sanchez violated offseason rules because Ryan and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer attended some of the practices.
The game also marked the return of Indianapolis Colts jersey
Revis, who signed a four-year deal, ending 36-day holdout a week before opener. He was in the Jets starting lineup.
Tomlinson, Cromartie and Jason Taylor(notes), high-profile acquisitions during the offseason for the Jets, made their debuts.

Post game notes: Ravens-Jets

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Let’s take a look at the post game notes and talk some X’s and O’s from the Ravens 10-9 win over Rex Ryan and the Jets…
Game notes…
Boldin’s impact: Versatility is the key word to describe the role that WR Anquan Boldin(notes) plays for the Ravens’ offense. As we saw, he can align in multiple spots on the field—both inside and outside of the numbers. Plus, when the Ravens do get into nfl jerseys
3rd and short to medium situations, he is the ideal player to run inside breaking routes away from the defender’s leverage. Those are high percentage throws for QB Joe Flacco(notes) in an offense that was very good on third down—converting on 11 of 19 opportunities. Boldin finished with 110-yards on 7 receptions. Big first night.
Sanchez struggles: This will be a big topic of discussion throughout the week, because when the starting QB of an NFL team doesn’t take chances—or give his WRs opportunities to make plays down the field—something is missing. How many times did Sanchez take the check down, or throw the swing route to the RB? The Jets do need to open up their playbook for the QB, but when he shows the coaching staff that he is not going to challenge the secondary, there aren’t many options. The Jets’ QB didn’t produce against the Baltimore pressure schemes and when the Ravens did drop back into their Cover 2 scheme—he took the easy way out every time. Finishing with a stat line of 10-21 for 74-yards, and only converting 1 of 11 thrid down attempts, isn’t going to win many football games in this league.
Defensive looks: If you like defensive football, then it is easy to get into what both the Jets and the Ravens will show you from a scheme perspective. In pressure situations, these defenses will give multiple looks, use overload blitz packages and play zero-man technique (no safety help) in the secondary. The complete opposite of what we see from Tampa 2 teams, these game plans are long, in-depth and require all eleven players to prepare in the meeting room throughout the week.
Ravens’ personnel advantage: One thing to note from the game is the use of “Posse” personnel (3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB) by Baltimore offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. By bringing WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes) onto the field, Ryan was forced to bring rookie CB Kyle Wilson(notes) into the game as part of the Jets’ defensive sub packages. The Ravens targeted Wilson inside of the numbers—and the rookie struggled. One thing about Ryan is that he is not going to change the way he calls a game based off of who is on the field—but Baltimore took advantage of it.
Ray Lewis(notes): This is how LBs should play the position. A great player to study on tape, because Lewis doesn’t have any hesitation in his game. The Ravens’ LB can diagnose plays, get downhill and use power at the point of attack. No false steps, technique sound with his head placement in taking on lead blocks and in his tackling, plus he doesn’t take plays off. This is a good example for younger players, because after so many years in the league, your speed will drop. But, technique always carries players as they get older.
The Jets’ running game: With the play of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Sanchez, the Jets will have to engineer drives and convert in third and short opportunities. That is how they won games in ’09. Starts with Shonn Greene(notes). Can’t put the ball on the ground in this league and expect the offense to feature you as a No.1 back. Did see some burst to the edge from L.T., but he isn’t going to carry this team. Has to be Greene—and it has to be better.
Revis: Wasn’t testedt. Like we talked about above, the Ravens moved Bolin around on offense and Ryan didn’t choose to put his best cover corner on the No.1 WR. His footwork wasn’t ideal, but that is because of the time missed. However, still see that top tier talent when he comes out of his breaks and plays with mirror technique against a WR. The holding call? That happens to every corner who is active with their hands.
X’s and O’s..
The RB flip: Saw the Jets use this tonight to get L.T. to the edge. It is designed to beat an overaggressive defense like the Ravens. Force the contain player to crash for the cutback and flip the ball to the RB after a counter step in the backfield.
3x1 slant: I like what the Raven do on offense with TE Todd Heap(notes). From a defensive perspective, when he is removed from the core of the formation as the “X” receiver (or split end), he is there for a reason—to get the ball. Draws the matchup of a safety and run the slant. 3x1 in third and short equals a backside slant in almost every offense.
The Pistol: An offense we see more in the college game, but the Pistol is starting to show up in the NFL. The QB aligns in the gun with the RB in the dot position directly behind him. The Jets put Brad Smith(notes) into the game to run the counter option. I also saw it on Sunday with the Bills and the Lions.
Quick hits…
- The Ravens’ Tom Zbikowski(notes) has to know better than to field a punt inside of the 5-yard line and run laterally to the pursuit of the coverage team. Every returner is taught to get vertically up the field. That could have been a disaster.
- Curious about the technique of Jets’ CB Antonio Cromartie(notes) at the line of Minnesota Vikings jersey
scrimmage. He plays in a press position, but doesn’t use his hands—choosing to “bail” (turn hips and run) instead of getting a jam. Tough for a guy that plays too tall down the field.
- TE Dustin Keller(notes) has to run his route at the right depth in a 4th down situation. Got to know the sticks.

Wild center James Sheppard fractures left kneecap

Dallas Cowboys jersey

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP)—Minnesota Wild center James Sheppard(notes) has a fractured left kneecap and there is no timetable for his return.
The team disclosed the injury Tuesday. It nfl jerseys
said Sheppard was hurt in an off-ice accident on Saturday night in Vail, Colo., but did not say what happened.
The timing couldn’t be much worse for Sheppard, a Minnesota Vikings jersey
former first-round draft pick who has been slow to develop in the Wild organization. The team signed veteran center Matt Cullen(notes) this offseason to provide some depth at the position.

5 key offseason moves that do not involve Ilya Kovalchuk

Dallas Cowboys jersey

The Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) saga has dominated the offseason news cycle while overshadowing the additions of key players who weren't seeking 17-year contracts. With help from former Calgary Flames general manager Craig Button, Sporting News breaks down some of nfl jersey
the league's best offseason pickups:
Nathan Horton(notes), F, Boston Bruins
The deal: The Bruins sent defenseman Dennis Wideman(notes) and first- and third-round picks to the Florida Panthers for Horton and forward Gregory Campbell(notes).
The impact: Nobody doubts Horton's talent. Playing for a contender that will surround him with talent should help him finally reach his potential. "When he's motivated, he's a really good player," former teammate David Booth(notes) says. "Maybe he was just kind of feeling stagnant in Florida."
Button says: "He's going to a team where he doesn't have to be the go-to guy. That's important for him. Not everybody is geared toward that."
Paul Martin(notes), D, Pittsburgh Penguins
The deal: Martin signed a five-year, $25 million deal on the first day of free agency.
The impact: The Penguins signed Martin to replace the offensive void created by the free-agent departure of defenseman Sergei Gonchar(notes) — and it's a great fit. "Heading to Pittsburgh, the style of play is so different ( from New Jersey's)," Martin says. "Defense is important, but with the type of players they have on their team, I can help during the rush, help create offense and not be afraid to get past the blue line."
Button says: "I'm a huge Paul Martin fan. In Martin, you have a guy who is effortless in his play. Is he strong and flashy? No, but he is efficient. He knows how to get the puck and get the puck moving. … He's the type of player that winning teams have."
Jiri Hudler(notes), F, Detroit Red Wings
The deal: Hudler returned from the KHL to fulfill his two-year contract, worth $2.875 million per season.
The impact: The Red Wings struggled last season Indianapolis Colts jersey
because they didn't have their usual depth up front. Hudler's return, along with the addition of Mike Modano(notes), brings this team closer to the roster that advanced to consecutive Stanley Cup finals.
Button says: "(Red Wings coach) Mike (Babcock) says they're going to have (Dan) Cleary, Modano and Hudler play together. If that's your third line, that means you're playing against other teams' third pairing on defense and not against their best checkers. That's where teams take advantage."
Viktor Stalberg(notes), F, Chicago Blackhawks
The deal: Chicago traded forwards Kris Versteeg(notes) and Bill Sweatt to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Stalberg, Philippe Paradis and Christopher DiDomenico(notes).
The impact: What's lost in all the player subtractions the Blackhawks were forced to make is a system that still has a lot of good young talent. GM Stan Bowman wanted to get bigger, and adding the 6- 3 Stalberg helps. "He's physically strong," Bowman says. "We're very high on him."
Button says: "Stalberg is a big winger, and Chicago already has (Patrick) Kane and (Marian) Hossa. Now Stalberg just has to fit behind them. He doesn't have to come in and carry the ball. He's big and can skate."
Keith Ballard(notes), D, Vancouver Canucks
The deal: The Canucks traded forwards Steve Bernier(notes), Michael Grabner(notes) and a first-round pick to the Panthers for Ballard and prospect Victor Oreskovich(notes).
The impact: The additions of Ballard and defenseman Dan Hamhuis(notes) should ease the pressure on goalie Roberto Luongo(notes). They also make the Canucks legit Stanley Cup contenders. "I'm fortunate to be going to a very good team," Ballard says. "The expectation is to win every night, and I'm excited to be around that."
Button says: "Keith is a real competitor. He can play a lot of Minnesota Vikings jersey
minutes, he blocks shots, he's physical and he battles. He can skate and get the puck out of his own zone quickly. You put him with the Sedin twins, who find open guys, and I think Ballard could get 50 or 60 points because of his ability to jump into the attack."
