As the Chicago Bears have stumbled through a 0-3 preseason, panic has remained trapped beneath the surface. We've only seen a few warning signs, most notably quarterback Jay Cutler's admission Saturday night that pass protection issues has made it difficult "just trusting guys" on the offensive line.

3. It's been psychologically jarring to see the Bears' usually pristine special teams in such disarray. Long-snapper Patrick Mannelly's neck injury rendered the Aug. 21 game against the Oakland Raiders moot. Opponents have blocked two punts and one field goal. Meanwhile, the Bears' longest special-teams play has been a 32-yard kickoff return from Danieal Manning. Taken individually, none of these issues would be alarming. But it's jarring when you consider the Bears normally have been explosive and impenetrable under coordinator Dave Toub.
Take a deep breath
1. If the line can come together and Cutler can calm his nerves, the Bears have demonstrated they have some explosive parts to this offense. Receiver Johnny Knox is averaging 21 yards per reception. Tailback Matt Forte has an 89-yard touchdown run to his credit, and backup Chester Taylor produced a nifty 34-yard run the other night. And we're only being honest in noting that the first defense the Bears will face this season, the Lions, has struggled equally as much in the preseason.
2. The defense hasn't been close to full strength this summer, considering injuries to linebackers Nick Roach (knee), Brian Urlacher (calf) and Lance Briggs (ankle). Safety Major Wright broke a finger during a promising preseason debut, leaving us unable to evaluate the expected pairing of Wright at free safety and Chris Harris at strong. Finally, defensive end Julius Peppers has shown up with two sacks in limited playing time. Don't forget about him.
3. Toub and the rest of the Bears' special teams deserve some benefit of Bears jersey

"He's a handful in the rush," Sparano said a week into camp. "He set the edge of the defense pretty well, strong guy and very, very smart."
When Sparano said that, Alama-Francis hadn't been an outside linebacker for long, just a handful of practices. But it wasn't the first time Alama-Francis had switched on a whim, and this change brought an opportunity to stick in the NFL after bombing out with the Detroit Lions.

Starr for two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. But Alama-Francis didn't play organized football until his sophomore year at Hawaii. He was a basketball walk-on, but football coach June Jones convinced him to convert.
The Lions drafted Alama-Francis 58th overall in 2007. He played tackle and end under D-line specialist Rod Marinelli, but started only two games over two seasons. The Lions cut him at the end of last year's preseason. He remained unemployed until November, when the Dolphins signed him to play defensive end at 6-foot-5 and 290 pounds.
Then, with three offseason workouts to go before summer break, the Dolphins approached Alama-Francis about standing on two feet for the first time. No more springing out of a three-point stance. They wanted him to try outside linebacker.
Sparano and linebackers coach Bill Sheridan saw something in the way Alama-Francis moved for a player his size. Alama-Francis said he had "three good practices" to show he could handle the gig.
"That's not a lot," he said. "When they're throwing things at you to see how you'll react, you have to do the best you can with what's been given to you. But it was an opportunity, and I embraced it. I was thankful."
After those three OTA workouts, Sparano didn't view the move as experimental anymore. Alama-Francis is at about 275 pounds now.

Family obligations thinning out coaching ranks
A quiet, dignified leave-taking occurred under the pine trees near the lovely shores of the Wisconsin River in Stevens Point on July 29 after Germantown's WIAA state baseball quarterfinal loss to Waukesha West.
And it's emblematic of a trend that there is probably no going back from.
"My son (Hruz) is 10 now and playing Little League and I haven't had the chance to coach him yet," said Germantown baseball coach Parrish Wagner, a father of three. "I've just discovered that I'm missing too many of my son's activities, so I want to focus on the family more."
Wagner's resignation after six years on the job - after a career high point of cheap nfl jerseys giving the school its first state baseball berth in 24 years - surprised many, but it was something that had sat on his mind all summer.
Longer terms becoming extinct

Flash-forward 20 years to a different time with different kinds of cultural pressures surrounding it.
Hruz Wagner, like his father, loves baseball, but Parrish, with almost daily games and practices from mid-May until the end of July, has had to miss out on a lot of what Hruz has been achieving these last few years.
"He (Hruz) finally asked me this past summer if I would coach his team," Parrish said, "and he was upset when I missed his championship game. Hruz is a kid who loves the game and I don't want it to leave a bitter taste in his mouth. I know he loves hanging out at the park (at the high school Dream Field) with us, but there have been a lot of times where I've come home and he's asleep already not having been able to tell me how his day went.
"Anybody who's been a coach of 16- to 18-year-olds for months and sometimes years at a time and not been able to spend time with their own kids understands what I'm saying."
Yet, the coaching bug, once caught, is hard to shake.
That previously Jets jersey mentioned spring coach, whose daughter is upset with the lack of time he has for her, will probably try serving as an assistant for a time, with fewer responsibilities (and presumably more bedtime stories told) than the head coach.
And Wagner next spring will happily get used to the idea that the Little League players he will be leading are younger, less skilled and maybe a little less passionate about the game.
But when he's able to see his son make a good play in the field or hit a home run, that smile or hug he'll get in return will be more than worth that trade-off.

Warhawks' state wait comes to an end
Germantown — Before announcing his resignation a few short days later, Germantown baseball coach Parrish Wagner provided Warhawks baseball fans with one final lasting memory.
He hopes the memory - that of his team's unexpected run to the WIAA Summer Baseball State Tournament for the first time in more than two decades - is the building block of future successes, albeit without him.
"It's a nice thing to hang your hat on," Wagner said following his nfl jerseys team's 2-1 quarterfinal loss to Waukesha West at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point on July 29.
"You come into every season, you have your open gyms and the kids start throwing, playing their spring ball and getting ready for the first day of practice. This is where you want to be, this is where you want your last game to be played, whether it's the quarterfinals or the finals. This is what you shoot for. Everyone talks about going to Stevens Point. We got to experience that and it's something the kids will never forget."
Losing record
The unforgettable run ended a few games sooner than the Warhawks would have liked, but the nine-day stretch of postseason baseball turned in by Germantown lifted the only team with a losing record - the Warhawks finished 14-17 - into the state field of eight teams for the first time since 1986.
Germantown's final four games of the season were all decided by one run, starting with a 4-3 regional final upset of Hamilton followed by victories over Slinger (3-2) and top-seeded Menomonee Falls (2-1) in the sectional.
"(Making it to state) gives the kids a little spirit and hope for everybody," Wagner said. "You don't have to finish 32-2 to make it here. It's learning from every game you play. It's building momentum and putting things together, putting the puzzle pieces in the right place for the last stretch and that's what we did. It was a nice run, a lot of fun."
The fun was nearly extended past the quarterfinal. The Warhawks took a 1-0 lead off Waukesha West starter Jeff Neuman on an RBI ground out by Jordan Infield that snapped a scoreless tie, but in the bottom half of Patriots jersey the inning, the Wolverines touched Germantown sophomore reliever Brian Keller for two runs (one earned). In the top of the seventh, West closer Ryan Solberg worked around a hit batsmen with two strikeouts to slam the door on the Warhawks.
The decisive top of the sixth inning started with an infield error. Two batters later, Solberg ripped an RBI triple and later scored on Aaron Jushka's base hit.
"We always talk about giving a team 22, 23 outs," Wagner said. "Well, we gave them 22, and we only made them make 19. We got ourselves out twice and those were big innings. We got a guy picked off (first base in fourth inning) after a leadoff base hit and the mishap at second base," when a Germantown runner missed the base in the fifth inning.
Solid pitching
The Warhawks, by far the lightest-hitting team at the tournament with a team average of .262, managed just three hits and not including the miscue in the fifth had just two base runners advance past second base against Neuman and Solberg.
"That's what (Neuman) has done all year for us," Waukesha West coach Chad Montez said. "He throws strikes consistently. He's not going to throw it by you; his slider is his best pitch and if he can throw that for a strike consistently and we play defense behind him, we'll be in every game.
"(Solberg) has been our closer all year and his leadership and experience and his presence - I mean, you put a 6-5 guy on the mound that throws fairly hard - he makes me relax a little more."
Keller and starter Tyler Thicke were almost equally impressive for Germantown. The game was finally postponed until the following day after another 80-minute delay as fans, coaches and players sat in the dark waiting for word from the WIAA.
"It was kind of a cluster and we dealt with a lot of adversity, but so did (the Wolverines)," Wagner said.

He hopes the memory - that of his team's unexpected run to the WIAA Summer Baseball State Tournament for the first time in more than two decades - is the building block of future successes, albeit without him.
"It's a nice thing to hang your hat on," Wagner said following his nfl jerseys team's 2-1 quarterfinal loss to Waukesha West at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point on July 29.
"You come into every season, you have your open gyms and the kids start throwing, playing their spring ball and getting ready for the first day of practice. This is where you want to be, this is where you want your last game to be played, whether it's the quarterfinals or the finals. This is what you shoot for. Everyone talks about going to Stevens Point. We got to experience that and it's something the kids will never forget."
Losing record
The unforgettable run ended a few games sooner than the Warhawks would have liked, but the nine-day stretch of postseason baseball turned in by Germantown lifted the only team with a losing record - the Warhawks finished 14-17 - into the state field of eight teams for the first time since 1986.
Germantown's final four games of the season were all decided by one run, starting with a 4-3 regional final upset of Hamilton followed by victories over Slinger (3-2) and top-seeded Menomonee Falls (2-1) in the sectional.
"(Making it to state) gives the kids a little spirit and hope for everybody," Wagner said. "You don't have to finish 32-2 to make it here. It's learning from every game you play. It's building momentum and putting things together, putting the puzzle pieces in the right place for the last stretch and that's what we did. It was a nice run, a lot of fun."
The fun was nearly extended past the quarterfinal. The Warhawks took a 1-0 lead off Waukesha West starter Jeff Neuman on an RBI ground out by Jordan Infield that snapped a scoreless tie, but in the bottom half of Patriots jersey the inning, the Wolverines touched Germantown sophomore reliever Brian Keller for two runs (one earned). In the top of the seventh, West closer Ryan Solberg worked around a hit batsmen with two strikeouts to slam the door on the Warhawks.
The decisive top of the sixth inning started with an infield error. Two batters later, Solberg ripped an RBI triple and later scored on Aaron Jushka's base hit.
"We always talk about giving a team 22, 23 outs," Wagner said. "Well, we gave them 22, and we only made them make 19. We got ourselves out twice and those were big innings. We got a guy picked off (first base in fourth inning) after a leadoff base hit and the mishap at second base," when a Germantown runner missed the base in the fifth inning.
Solid pitching
The Warhawks, by far the lightest-hitting team at the tournament with a team average of .262, managed just three hits and not including the miscue in the fifth had just two base runners advance past second base against Neuman and Solberg.
"That's what (Neuman) has done all year for us," Waukesha West coach Chad Montez said. "He throws strikes consistently. He's not going to throw it by you; his slider is his best pitch and if he can throw that for a strike consistently and we play defense behind him, we'll be in every game.
"(Solberg) has been our closer all year and his leadership and experience and his presence - I mean, you put a 6-5 guy on the mound that throws fairly hard - he makes me relax a little more."

Ex-QBs: Cardinals make right call in benching Matt Leinart
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart(notes) has been benched again, and plenty of former NFL quarterbacks understand why.
"I just don't see it with Matt Leinart, never have," said football jersey former NFL quarterback Steve Beuerlein, now an analyst for CBS. "It's not that I don't like the guy. I just haven't seen it."
Said former league MVP Rich Gannon: "Leinart's got to play the game faster. I haven't seen much in the first two (preseason) games."
Neither has Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, who announced Thursday that Leinart has been benched in favor of Derek Anderson(notes), who will start Saturday night's preseason game at Chicago.
Leinart's benching could be permanent, too. NFL coaches use the third preseason game as a dress rehearsal for the regular season, and Anderson now appears in line to start the Sept. 12 opener at St. Louis.
Losing out to Anderson would be a career low point for Leinart, the 10th-overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft. He was expected to take over for the retired Kurt Warner(notes), but Leinart has not looked ready in camp.
"This kid's had plenty of chances to take over that team," said Boomer Esiason, a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback who led the Cincinnati Bengals to Super Bowl 23. "He has a lot of great offensive weapons around him and a coach who was willing to throw the ball. Now they may have to dial all that back because they're not going to trust him.
"I'm not going to compare Leinart to Ryan Leaf—he's not Chiefs jersey that bad. And JaMarcus Russell(notes) was on a different planet bad, completely off the charts. But Leinart's been a big first-round disappointment."
Leinart was unimpressive in Monday night's 24-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, going three-and-out in all three of his series. Whisenhunt said Leinart would play Saturday night against the Bears but not how much.
Time could be growing short for Leinart in Arizona. He could be traded in the coming days—or even released—if not named the starter. It already might be too late for Leinart to earn the confidence of Cardinals coaches and players.
"It's not good when your head coach is asked what your quarterback brings to the table and he says stuff like, 'I hope we find out,' " Beuerlein said. "He's seen Leinart for four years. He should see things in practice. He should see how he's respected by his teammates.
"You should be able to say, 'The guy's a leader, he has presence, guys in the locker room respect him.' Instead you hear Whisenhunt saying, 'Well, I hope he shows us.' "
Leinart already was in a difficult position, replacing Warner on a team that has won the NFC West the past two seasons and advanced to Super Bowl 43. The Cardinals are not willing to concede the division to the San Francisco 49ers or anyone else despite losing elite talents like Warner, Anquan Boldin(notes), Karlos Dansby(notes) and Antrel Rolle(notes) this offseason.
However, the Cardinals will not win the division unless their quarterback plays far better than Leinart has shown capable. Whisenhunt obviously is concerned, and now Anderson will get a chance Saturday to convince the coaches he is the best option.

2010 ACC Preview
Clemson: Two-sport quarterback Kyle Parker is back, but I wonder if Clemson will struggle offensively in 2010. Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper should be productive out of the backfield in replacing C.J. Spiller(notes), but the situation at wide receiver is murky. Xavier Dye and nfl jerseys Terrence Ashe had nice springs, and Brandon Clear looked to be improved, but they still haven’t been tested in the regular season. However, the defensive line will be one of the best in the nation, as it is loaded with good talent and great depth. Three starters return from last season’s line, led by junior end Da'Quan Bowers, who has big pro potential. Tackle Jarvis Jenkins is also a future pro. Boston College: BC will have a stingy defense once again. The defensive line is still a bit unsettled, but the linebackers will be the heart and soul of the unit with freshman All-America Luke Kuechly and 2008 Defensive Player of the Year Mark Herzlich. Could relying on the defense be enough for the Eagles to win their third Atlantic title in four years? Likely not, as they are going to need solid play under center. There were already questions about quarterback David Shinskie, and his job will be even tougher with the loss of top receiver Colin Larmond Jr. for the entire season. Montel Harris is a tremendous running back and will be leaned upon heavily once again by the Eagles. The junior rushed for 1,457 yards and 14 touchdowns on 308 carries in ’09. But will he be able to have similar production if the passing game can’t help move the chains?
Florida State: The Seminoles will be much better on defense under new coordinator Mark Stoops. But they couldn’t get any worse, right? It’s finally Jimbo Fisher’s team after the retirement of Bobby Bowden, and those around the Seminoles program could not be any more optimistic. Quarterback Christian Ponder’s shoulder seems to be healthy and is being pumped for a Heisman run. Losing receiver Jarmon Fortson will hurt, however, because he complemented Bert Reed very well. But the backfield is deep, and Ponder will make plays with his feet and his arm. The Seminoles want Oklahoma on September 11 real bad, but will the defense be fully ready?
Maryland: This season is all about the future of head coach Ralph Friedgen and the health of Da’Rel Scott. The Terrapins will be fine on defense, as they were last year. But the offense remains the major question mark. Quarterback Jamarr Robinson took command of the huddle this spring, and he displayed his dazzling athleticism when he was pressed into action late last year. Scott has looked great this fall, and junior Torrey Smith was one of college football’s most productive all-purpose players in ’09. But can the offensive line protect Robinson? The opener against Navy will be huge to see just how confident the Terps are in a make-or-break year for the Fridge.
N.C. State: With a new athletic director on board, head coach Tom O’Brien enters a make-or-break season, much like Friedgen at Maryland. The major question for the Wolfpack is whether the defense can improve after a woeful ’09. Former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta will be coaching the linebackers, but the secondary is young. The team ranked No. 99 in the nation last year in scoring defense and No. 106 in pass efficiency defense. Those numbers must drastically improve. Russell Wilson will continue to keep things exciting under center, especially with arguably the best receiving unit in the league. However, the Wolfpack will enter a season without any starting experience in the backfield for the first time since 2005.
Wake Forest: With Riley Skinner(notes) gone, Ted Stachitas will be under center for the Demon Deacons. Stachitas, a sophomore who took over for Tim Tebow(notes) at Nease High in Jacksonville, Fla., has a strong arm and has capable running backs and wide receivers to make the offensive attack run smoothly. Jim Grobe is one of Vikings jersey the better head coaches in the country and always has his teams playing hard. But Wake could struggle because of inferior play along the offensive line. Both tackle spots could be problem areas.
Coastal
Virginia Tech: There was some concern about the Virginia Tech defense this season because of some uncertainty in the front seven, but the secondary should carry the unit until the linemen and linebackers become more comfortable on Bud Foster’s defense. If the Hokies could stop the run by the time conference play opens, they should be fine. They do, however, face Boise State in the season opener. If they trip up against the Broncos, this team still has enough talent to win the Coastal this season. With versatile quarterback Tyrod Taylor, the best backfield in the nation and a group of improved receivers, the Hokies are in good shape.
Miami (FL): Head coach Randy Shannon begins his fourth season in Miami, and the Hurricanes are poised to officially make their mark on the national scene again. Let’s not forget, however, that the job offensive coordinator Mark Whipple has done with the ‘Canes is second to none and is a key reason why they can compete for a conference title in 2010. A healthy Jacory Harris is expected to be more consistent under center, and the staff is excited about the depth at running back — despite losing Javarris James(notes) to the next level and dealing with Graig Cooper’s injury. The front seven should be very tough to compete against — particularly the defensive ends — but will the secondary struggle?
Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets will employ a 3-4 defense under new coordinator Al Groh, which should give opposing offenses problems despite losing defensive studs Derrick Morgan(notes) and Morgan Burnett(notes). But it may take a little time. Expect some wild ACC contests, but they have enough playmakers on defense to win some shootouts. In B-back Anthony Allen, they have a more than capable replacement for Jonathan Dwyer(notes). He can definitely run between the tackles, even if the offensive line has some questions following the departures of three starters. But can Stephen Hill be a poor man’s Demaryius Thomas(notes), and can quarterback Joshua Nesbitt make enough plays in the passing game to keep defenses honest?
North Carolina: The Tar Heels have all the talent in the world, but will we see all of them on the field ready to compete? With the South Beach drama involving Marvin Austin and Greg Little — and perhaps others — the uncertainty in Chapel Hill is one of the more interesting storylines in the league. On defense, the Heels go two-deep at nearly every position. But can an offense, which ranked 108th in total offense in ’09, put enough points on the board? T.J. Yates held off Bryn Renner for the starting job under center, but the rushing attack will need to improve, along with an offensive line that is a year older. We’ll see if the Tar Heels can put the distractions behind them when they get a big test in the opener against LSU.
Duke: Head coach David Cutcliffe is building a solid program in Durham. The Blue Devils have added much-needed speed and depth during his tenure, specifically at wide receiver. With an offensive line and running game that should be steady, the Blue Devils could sneak into a lower-tier bowl game. The defense should be a little more exotic under new coordinator Marion Hobby, but will the defensive line be stout enough against the run and generate enough pressure? The talent level isn’t quite there yet at this stage, but Cutcliffe knows how to coach. And I like Sean Renfree, who replaces four-year starter Thaddeus Lewis under center.
Virginia: Rebuilding will be the key word for the Cavaliers this season. Mike London is the new sheriff in town, and he’s been Dolphins jersey doing his best to remake the Virginia brand, reaching out to high school coaches across the state in an effort to help recent disappointing recruiting efforts from the old regime. On the field, the defense will shift to a 4-3 base, but the offense could struggle once again with a rushing attack that doesn’t look very strong and the quarterback position looking shaky at best. Could signal-caller Marc Verica stabilize the position under center?

In my last article we looked at what a podcast is, basically a pre-recorded, online, radio show that is distributed via RSS to all those who subscribe to the feed. You may already provide cds of sermons for people who miss the service. That's great, but I'd suggest that podcasting has three great advantages over cds.
1.Podcasts are accessible from anywhere as long as you have a computer and an Internet connection. If a member is traveling, they don't have to wait to listen to the podcast. This is especially nice because usually people have time and would love to listen to something while traveling.
2.Podcasts are free. How much does your church spend on cds? Now imagine if you can get 25% of the people who get cds to start using the podcasts instead. That could save your church a couple hundred dollars over a year.
3.Podcasts are quick. If you reproduce cds, it probably takes a significant amount of football jersey time. For most churches each cd burned takes from 2-5 minutes. If you burn 100 cds, that will take 3-9 hours just for the reproducing. With podcasting you just make a digital copy on your computer and upload it for the podcast. Not including any editing time (which you would have to do for a cd as well) you could be done in a just a couple minutes instead of a couple hours.

These people may just walk through your church doors one day.

There are people all over the world going through struggles, searching for an answer. You have that answer. Podcasting on sites like iTunes can let your church minister to these people. You can do this with sermons that deal with specific issue, Bible lessons about certain topics, or Q and A podcasts addressing various questions people may have. Podcasting about coping with marriage issues or addictions can a good way to reach out to the non-believing world desperately wanting answers and help. Podcasting about pop issues and subjects is another way to reach people. Some people aren't looking for help, but are looking for information and opinions about various current events and people.
